Long Live Mardi Gras Cocktail
Hi, there naturally hooked crew. Today I am not going to cut straight to the chase because if you are anything like me, you have been mourning the loss of this year’s Mardi Gras festivities and are spending your days being all nostalgic about our Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler memories of yore. For those of us who grew up here, Mardi Gras on the Gulf Coast is more than just parades and parties (even though we love the parades and parties!). Still, it is truly about spending time with your families, lifelong traditions, and a sense of togetherness throughout the city.
For those of you not from these parts, the feeling around this time of year would remind you of the Christmas spirit if Christmas also included colorful beads, king cakes, and lots of cocktails. People walk down the streets greeting each other, wishing them a Happy Mardi Gras. You see whole families gather together to enjoy good food, fun, and laughter. Family members who may not come home for Christmas will venture home for Mardi Gras.
Growing up in Mobile, AL, the birthplace of American Mardi Gras (I will not argue that fact today), this now three-week festival becomes a part of who you are with all of its majesty and mischief. If you have never been, do yourself a favor and put it on your bucket list. Maybe we will be back in business by 2022. For now, you will have to settle for the little taste of Mardi Gras offer you today.
Since we are all celebrating with our pods from home this year, I figured I would put together a delicious recipe fit for a Mardi Gras King or Queen. I built on a classic gin and tonic, upgraded it with a Mystic Mardi Gras twist, and topped it off with the traditional Mardi Gras colors.
I present to you The Long Live Mardi Gras Cocktail.
