Natural Hair Tutorial: The Cornrow Braidout
Over the years, I have had a love/hate relationship with the braid out. Let me explain. When I still had my hair relaxed, I loved to do cornrow braid outs to give my hair a naturally curly look. Who knew back then that my hair would do that if I just stopped relaxing it. The braid out was a great option also as a transitioning style. I had many excellent braid outs while transitioning my natural hair.
After I went natural, I tried multiple ways to do braid outs, and it just never worked. I followed video tutorials from all of my favorite YouTubers, and still, every time, it would be a massive fail. I tried various products for braid outs and still fail after fail. Either it would look super stringy, or frizzy, or just all-around bad. I typically just ended up putting it in a bun and heading off to work. After numerous failures, I finally decided to give up.
So a few weeks ago, after years of braid out fails on my natural hair, I decided to try a cornrow braid out, and… it actually worked. I had amazing results. I think it helps to do cornrows vs. a regular braid out because there is no real separating of the hair, which can lead to frizz. The sections are already parted, so all it needed was some light fluffing, and there you have it, a beautiful full braid out. (Finally, a win in the braid out department for me.) I was so happy with the outcome that I had to share the step-by-step instructions with you guys.
Happy Braiding!
